Description

A flat washer, also often referred to as simply a washer, is a thin flat disc with a hole in the center. It is generally used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a screw, nut, or bolt. When placed between the bearing surface of the fastener and the part to which it is attached, the flat washer provides a greater bearing surface area than the fastener alone. This distribution of pressure helps prevent damage to the installation material and ensures a more secure and complete connection.

In addition to load distribution, flat washers can also be used to ensure tightness, as a spacer, to reduce vibration, or to protect surfaces from the rotating or driving part’s motion.

Flat washers can be made of different materials such as steel, stainless steel, and brass, and they come in various sizes to fit a wide range of hardware. The selection of material and size depends on the application, the type of installation material, and environmental conditions, among other factors.
