What is Acorn Nut?
Acorn nuts, also known as cap nuts, crown hex nuts, blind nuts, or dome nuts (in the UK), are a type of fastener that features a domed top to cover the end of a bolt or a screw. This dome provides a finished appearance and serves to protect against stripping, allowing for the bolt or screw to be reused after maintenance. Besides their practical use, the dome offers an added level of safety by covering the sharp ends of threads, thereby reducing the risk of injury.
Made from various materials, including stainless steel, acorn nuts are used in applications where aesthetics are important or where it’s beneficial to have a smooth, snag-free exterior. They’re commonly used in automotive applications, furniture, machinery, and anywhere a decorative or protective cap is needed over exposed threaded rods, bolts, or screws.
The presence of the domed cap not only enhances the appearance of the assembled parts but also protects the threads from damage and dirt, which might hinder the disassembly process. Given their unique blend of functionality and decoration, acorn nuts are a popular choice for a wide range of projects.
