What is Cage Nut?
Cage nut, or caged nut, consists of a (usually square) nut housed within a spring steel cage. This cage typically wraps around the nut and features two wings that, when compressed, allow for easier insertion into square holes in sheet metal, often found in server racks, equipment racks, and other applications where a regular nut might be hard to install.
The design of the cage nut allows it to be held in place by the cage, enabling the nut to float within the steel cage, which is particularly useful for aligning holes that are not perfectly aligned or for blind assembly where the installer cannot see the nut. This floating feature significantly eases the installation process, especially in tight or hard-to-reach spaces.
Cage nuts are commonly used in IT and telecom applications for mounting equipment in server racks, given their versatility and the convenience they offer for equipment installation, modification, and maintenance. They are advantageous in materials that are too thin or soft to support a tapped thread, providing a robust threaded mounting point where it would otherwise be impossible. Cage nuts can be easily removed and relocated within the rack, allowing for flexible equipment adjustments without damaging the mounting surface.
