What is Eye Bolt?

An eye bolt is a type of fastener that has a loop or eye at one end and threads on the other end. The loop or eye is designed to provide a secure point for attaching ropes, cables, hooks, or chains for lifting, anchoring, or pulling. Eye bolts come in various sizes and materials, including stainless steel and galvanized steel, making them suitable for different applications, ranging from light-duty to heavy-duty tasks.

There are generally two types of eye bolts:

  • Lifting Eye Bolts: These are intended for lifting up heavy objects. They usually have a shouldered design to help support the load and are commonly used in conjunction with lifting equipment. Lifting eye bolts are often rated for their load capacity and are made following strict safety standards.
  • Plain or Non-Shouldered Eye Bolts: These are used for non-lifting applications such as guy-wires, tie-downs, or as an anchor point. They are not designed to bear heavy loads and are mainly used for light-duty applications.

When using eye bolts, it’s essential to consider their load capacity and to ensure that they are properly installed and seated. It is also important to note that eye bolts used for lifting should not be used for angular lifts unless they are specifically rated for such use, as this can significantly diminish their load capacity and potentially lead to failure.
