Description
A flat washer, also often referred to as simply a washer, is a thin flat disc with a hole in the center. It is generally used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a screw, nut, or bolt. When placed between the bearing surface of the fastener and the part to which it is attached, the flat washer provides a greater bearing surface area than the fastener alone. This distribution of pressure helps prevent damage to the installation material and ensures a more secure and complete connection.
In addition to load distribution, flat washers can also be used to ensure tightness, as a spacer, to reduce vibration, or to protect surfaces from the rotating or driving part’s motion.
