What is Hanger Bolt?

A hanger bolt is a specialized type of fastener which is essentially a headless bolt. This means that it doesn’t have a built-in head for turning with a screwdriver or wrench. Instead, it features two different types of threads:

  • Wood or Lag Thread: One end of the hanger bolt has wood or lag screw threads that are designed to screw into wood or a similar material. This allows for secure fastening into studs, beams, or wooden posts.
  • Machine Screw Thread: The other end of the hanger bolt has machine screw threads that are compatible with nuts or tapped holes in metal components. This provides a means to attach metal fixtures or hardware to the wooden base.

Hanger bolts are typically installed by screwing the wood thread into a pre-drilled hole in the wood. Then, whatever object or fixture is being mounted can be attached over the protruding machine thread and secured with a nut.

Applications for hanger bolts are diverse, including hanging electrical conduit and other utilities, mounting engines or other heavy equipment to wooden bases, and architectural uses where a metal fixture needs to be securely attached to a wooden structure.

Installing hanger bolts requires careful preparation to ensure that the threads are correctly engaged and do not strip the wood or cause splitting. For larger sizes and industrial applications, specific tools or bolt drivers may be used to install hanger bolts properly.
