What is Hex Bolt?

A hex bolt, also known as a hex cap screw or machine bolt, is a common type of fastener that features a hexagonal head and machine threads for use with a nut or within a tapped hole. These bolts are one of the most widely used due to their versatility and ease of use.

Hex bolts have a smooth shoulder area beyond the standard amount of threading, which is designed to be installed into a hole with a diameter equal to the shank (non-threaded portion) of the bolt, while the threaded part fastens into a nut or tapped hole. They are suitable for fastening wood to wood, wood to metal, or metal to metal applications.

They are particularly useful in construction and machinery applications. Hex bolts can be tightened with simple tools like wrenches or ratchets, making them a practical fastener for a variety of projects. The head’s hexagonal shape provides a firm grip for tools, allowing for greater torque and ease of tightening or loosening.

Hex bolts come in various sizes, lengths, and materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel. They also come with different plating options such as zinc for corrosion resistance. The precise type of hex bolt chosen for a specific application will depend on the strength requirements, environmental conditions, and materials being fastened.
