What is Shear Nut?
A shear nut is a high-security permanent fastener. It is designed for applications where preventing tampering and unauthorized removal of the fastener is crucial. Once installed, shear nuts are extremely difficult to remove, which makes them an ideal choice for securing critical or sensitive components in various environments, including public areas where vandalism or theft could be a concern.
Key features of shear nuts include:
- Design: The typical shear nut has a conical shape with coarse threads designed for permanent installation. The hexagonal head of a shear nut is engineered to snap off at a predetermined torque level during installation, leaving behind a smooth, tamper-resistant surface that is difficult to grip with conventional tools.
- Material Variants: Shear nuts are available in various materials, including BZP (Bright Zinc Plated), galvanized steel, A2 stainless steel, and A4 stainless steel. This variety ensures that there are suitable options for both indoor and outdoor applications, providing resistance to environmental factors such as corrosion or rust.
- Security: Once the hexagonal head shears off, the remaining nut presents a significantly reduced risk of being tampered with or removed without specialized tools or techniques, making them a superb choice for permanent security fastening.
Shear nuts are frequently used in securing street furniture, public transportation fixtures, outdoor lighting, and in other public or high-security applications where the integrity of the fastener needs to be maintained over time without the possibility of unauthorized removal.
