Spring washers, also known as disc springs, Belleville washers, or conical washers, are a type of fastener that has a unique shape: they are generally round with a hole in the center, much like a flat washer, but they are conically shaped to create a spring effect.
The key feature of a spring washer is its ability to maintain a load or tension in a fastener assembly, which is particularly useful in applications where there is a risk of fasteners (such as bolts or screws) loosening due to vibration, thermal expansion and contraction, or other forces.
When the assembly is under load, the spring washer compresses and flattens. This compression allows the washer to store energy, which can then be released to maintain the tension in the assembly if the bolt or other fasteners start to loosen, effectively preventing the loosening of the assembly.
