Description
ooth lock washers, also known as serrated washers or star washers, are a type of washer that features teeth or serrations which extend radially inward or outward to bite into the bearing surface. This type of washer is especially effective as a lock washer when used with a soft substrate, such as aluminium or plastic, and can resist rotation more than a plain washer could on hard surfaces.
There are two main types of tooth lock washers: internal (where the teeth are towards the center hole) and external (where the teeth extend outward). The teeth of these washers are angled such that they will dig into the surfaces, therefore resisting force and preventing loosening of the fastener. Some designs, known as shakeproof or Shakeproof washers, have an odd number of teeth allowing for a continuous line of tooth contact.
Tooth lock washers are often used in applications where vibration is prevalent, these washers provide the needed tension and absorb the vibration between the fastening hardware and the surface. They come in various materials like stainless steel, carbon steel or spring steel and sizes to suit different environments and tasks.
