What is Wedge Anchor?
Wedge anchors are fasteners designed to anchor objects into concrete. They are installed by drilling a hole into the concrete, then placing the wedge anchor into the hole. When the nut is tightened, an expansion clip at the end of the anchor expands, wedging itself securely in the concrete. This makes the wedge anchor a permanent fixture that offers a strong hold for heavy-duty applications. They are commonly used in construction for attaching structural and non-structural elements to concrete and should only be used in solid concrete, not in porous or hollow materials such as brick or CMU block.
Wedge anchors work through a simple yet effective mechanism that creates a strong hold within concrete:
- Drilling: A hole is drilled into the concrete. The diameter and depth of the hole must match the size of the wedge anchor being used.
- Cleaning: The hole is then cleaned of all debris to ensure a proper fit. This can involve blowing out the dust, brushing, or vacuuming the hole.
- Inserting: The wedge anchor, which has a conical expansion plug and an expansion clip around the bottom end, is inserted into the hole in the concrete. It’s important that the hole allows the anchor to go in snugly without being too tight or too loose.
- Expanding: When the nut on the threaded end of the anchor is tightened, the anchor is drawn up, which pulls the conical plug upwards. This action forces the expansion clip to press against the walls of the hole.
- Clamping: As the clip expands, it forms a strong, mechanical connection with the concrete. The more you tighten the nut, the greater the force on the clip, which increases the grip of the anchor.
- Securing: Once fully expanded, the wedge anchor is securely fixed in place, and the attached fixture is clamped to the surface of the concrete.
The combination of the expansion plug and the clip provides a permanent anchoring point for fixtures and materials, and the strength of the hold is partially determined by the quality of the concrete and the depth of embedment of the anchor. This makes wedge anchors especially suitable for high-strength anchoring in both indoor and outdoor concrete applications.
